Attorney at Law
Award-winning attorney Mason Kerns was raised in an Iowa farm family. His parents taught him the value of hard work and instilled in him a sense of responsibility to advocate for those from all walks of life, particularly the disadvantaged. This perspective translated to a passion for representing the underdog—the accused and the injured—against the government and against corporations.
A high school athlete and honors student, Mr. Kerns chose to receive his undergraduate education at the University of Iowa, double-majoring in journalism and political science. In 2008, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, With Distinction. Mr. Kerns also graduated with With Honors in political science and With Honors and Kappa Tau Alpha in journalism. During college, he maintained nearly a 4.0 grade-point-average while working as an award-winning journalist for The Daily Iowan and The Des Moines Register.
Due to his academic prowess and dedication to serving the underprivileged, Mr. Kerns attended the University of Miami School of Law on a scholarship. In his career at UM, Mr. Kerns won the Best Legal Brief Award among 217 competitors in the school’s 1L Moot Court Competition. He also won, among other honors, the Dean’s Certificate of Achievement for outstanding academic performance in Criminal Law. He won the same Dean’s award for outstanding performance in Legal Research & Writing, and won the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Legal Research & Writing II. During law school, Mr. Kerns served on the H.O.P.E. (Helping Others through Pro Bono Efforts) Public Interest Leadership Board and represented an accused murderer in a wrongful convictions case for the Miami Innocence Clinic. Mr. Kerns graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 2011, receiving his juris doctor (J.D.) degree Cum Laude. Mr. Kerns took the bar exam and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2011.
After law school, rather than work for higher pay at a corporate civil defense firm, Mr. Kerns decided to join the Law Offices of Public Defender Carlos J. Martinez, representing the indigent accused of Miami-Dade County. A dedicated advocate in an office renowned nationwide for dynamic and zealous representation of those accused of crimes, Mr. Kerns tried nearly 30 jury trials in just over two years, after trying 50 bench trials in juvenile court during his first year as an attorney. Mr. Kerns proudly liberated clients facing an array of felony charges, including various clients facing life in prison.
It was as a Miami public defender that Mr. Kerns learned to win jury trials by devastating opposing witnesses—police, alleged victims, eyewitnesses, experts—through blistering cross examination, and by humanizing his clients to the jury through passionate and thorough closing argument. Mr. Kerns also earned recognition by discovering corrupt police practices and unconstitutional searches and seizures, leading to the suppression of evidence and dismissal of serious charges against his clients prior to trial.
After his work as a public defender, Mr. Kerns joined a prestigious Miami firm wherein he represented, inter alia, the world’s largest cruise lines, in wrongful death and catastrophic injury matters. His knowledge of maritime law and cruise line practices affords him an advantage in his present advocacy for injured passengers and crewmembers against the world’s cruise giants, including, but not limited to, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, and Oceania Cruises. During this time, Mr. Kerns also represented plaintiffs in serious personal injury cases, while continuing to provide zealous advocacy for White Collar clients in criminal defense cases.
Mr. Kerns then joined Leesfield Scolaro, P.A., a renowned catastrophic injury and wrongful death firm with a rich tradition of large verdicts and settlements for injured plaintiffs. At Leesfield Scolaro, Mr. Kerns handled wrongful death, medical malpractice, maritime personal injury, products liability, and other catastrophic personal injury matters, as well as multiple class-action lawsuits. While at Leesfield Scolaro, Mr. Kerns also represented two criminally accused individuals on a pro bono basis. He got the charges dismissed in both cases.
